An Intimate Summer Destination Wedding in Perugia, Italy

While I am a wedding photographer based in the Netherlands, photographing weddings in Utrecht, Amsterdam, Haarlem, and beyond, this past summer I photographed my first destination wedding in the Italian countryside.

I & R started planning their wedding two years before their big day. Their hearts were set on an intimate summer destination wedding in Italy, where they, along with their closest friends and family members, could celebrate their wedding, in a private and exclusive location.

They found their dream wedding location at Borgo Colognola, a gorgeous rustic farmhouse villa on the top of a hill surrounded by vast rolling hills, vineyards, and olive groves in the Italian countryside. This restored villa is just a short drive from the quaint Italian city of Perugia and only a two-hour drive from the history-rich, Florence.

I & R’s wedding was one to remember. Until this day, I find myself going back to relook at their wedding day photos to be reinspired for the upcoming weddings of the season.

Everything about that day was beyond memorable. Once we arrived at the location, we were met by stunning views of Italy’s rolling hills in the Umbrian countryside. People were jumping in the pool to cool themselves off before wedding preparations began.

The bride was surrounded by her bridesmaids as she got her hair and makeup done while the groom got ready in one of the private houses in the villa.

Many first looks happened that day. First, the bride shared a sweet first look with her father. Then she had a first look with her three older brothers. There were plenty of tears, smiles, laughs, and hugs shared. Finally, it was time for the bride and groom to see each other. It was a special moment before the portrait session and ceremony they got to share and experience together.

The day continued to get better and better. The ceremony was absolutely beautiful - the rolling hills and distant villas set the perfect backdrop for this summer wedding ceremony. Now and then, I had to put my camera down just to soak in all the shared love that everyone was experiencing.

The cocktail hour, the dinner, and the reception were filled with unity and joy - it was truly infectious. It was beautiful to see I & R being loved on and celebrated all day.

One cool surprise the bride had for the groom was revealed just before their first dance. She revealed her new short haircut! It was perfect. R’s eyes just zoned in on her as she walked down the cobblestone stairs from her suite.

I could go on and on about I & R’s wedding, but just scroll through the wedding pictures and you’ll see how stunning and perfect their day was.
